About Us

Why MSI?
We are a Company that is Solution-Driven!

Metallurgical Solutions, Inc. is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified commercial heat treating and consulting engineering company founded in January 1989. We specialize in salt bath heat treating, a process utilizing high temperature molten salts. We control the bath temperature with thermocouples to deliver the specific metallurgical properties you require.

In addition to salt baths, our services include but are not limited to fluidized bed, atmosphere and induction heat treating processes. Salt baths and fluidized bed furnaces provide superior heat transfer and temperature uniformity by conductive heating and cooling during the hardening process. Hardenss, toughness, and wear resistance – key metallurgical properties – are significantly improved.

MSI also provides clients with solutions in areas that require engineering assistance with materials selection and heat-treating processes that optimize the perfromance of manufactured components. Our experties in materials characterization, heat-treating knowledge, strength of materials, mechanical and physical properties, effects of heat treaing on service-related conditions, and so forth, are second to none.

MSI routinely perfroms metallurgical evaluations and examinations on tools and components that have experienced failures in service. Our work aids our clients in determining causes for and solutions required to improve the overall perfromance of tools and components.

We also offer metallurgical consulting services consisting of materials evaluation, failure analyses, and nondestructive examinations.

About MSI

Metallurgical Solutions, Inc. was founded in January 1989. It is the finest heat-treating company in New England for the heat-treatment of High-Speed steel, (HSS), tool steel and alloy steel tools and components. MSI is owned by the two families that started the company. With almost half the workforce present as family members, chances are good that the person who answers the phone is one of the owners. MSI specializes in the proper heat-treatment of tools and short run production jobs that have very stringent metallurgical requirements. Although most of our work is done in High-Speed molten salt baths, we are capable of many other applications.

Our Expertise

The management team at MSI, comprised of five family members, collectively has close to one hundred and seventy-five years of hands-on experience in the business of heat treating. Our work force, guided by this team, works diligently to heat treat customer’s tools and components with an ever-focused eye on quality.

Our metallurgical experience in material’s characterization, heat treating processes, laboratory testing, nondestructive testing and failure analyses provides us with the skills and knowledge to get the job done right the first time, every time!

MSI has an in-house metallurgist with over fifty years of experience in the heat- treating field; familiar with the art of salt bath furnace processing, metallurgical evaluations, nondestructive testing, process development, set up and trouble shooting. When we see areas where our recommendations would prove beneficial, we never hesitate to contact our customers to advise them of our thoughts regarding the processing of their work. We believe an ounce of fore sight is worth a pound of cure!
